Trained at the Australian Ballet School and graduating with honours, Gary Norman entered the Australian Ballet in 1970 and within two years was promoted to principal artist. A performer greatly admired by critics and audiences alike, he danced all of the leading roles in the major classical ballets and created roles in new works by internationally renowned modern choreographers, the most notable of which remains Glen Tetley’s Gemini. Norman’s other outstanding roles included Oberon in Frederick Ashton’s The Dream, Romeo in John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet, Onegin, also by Cranko, and Vronsky in Andre Prokovsky’s Anna Karenina. As a principal artist he also worked with the National Ballet of Canada and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and as a guest artist with the Hong Kong Ballet and the Philippines Ballet.

Norman was senior lecturer at the Victorian College of the Arts, and principal teacher for many years at the Australian Ballet School. At the request of artistic director Ross Stretton, Norman became principal ballet master of the Australian Ballet for two years prior to moving to London and the Royal Ballet School where he is currently senior classical teacher. He has been a guest teacher for the Royal Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet School, the National Ballet School of Canada, the Youth America Grand Prix in New York and the Japan Grand Prix in Sapporo.
