Jean-Yves Esquerre studied at the Mudra school, founded by Maurice Bejart in Belgium. He performed in Maurice Béjart’s Ballet of the 20th Century, John Neumeier’s Hamburg Ballet and Jiri Kylian’s Nederlands Dans Theater, before becoming ballet master of Le Ballet du Louvre and in 1987 being named Artistic Director of Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. Mr. Esquerre conducted an artistic evaluation of l’École Supérieure de Ballet du Québec, the National Ballet School of Canada and the School of Alberta Ballet. In 2014-2018, he served as an Artistic Director of the Dutch National Ballet Academy, the affiliated school of the Dutch National Ballet, directed by Ted Brandsen. Together with Mr. Brandsen, in 2017 Mr. Esquerre founded an independent, year-long educational program for selected Dutch and international students aged 15 to 19, that is currently called “Dutch National Trainee Program.” Mr. Esquerre serves as a juror/chairman in international ballet competitions such as Prix de Lausanne and YAGP.
