One of YAGP’s founding board members, Jose Manuel Carreño was born in Cuba, training at the Provincial School of Ballet and the National Ballet School. Having come from a family of ballet dancers, he won the Gold Medal at the New York International Ballet Competition in 1987, and the Grand Prix at the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1990. After four years with the Cuban National Ballet, Carreño joined the English National Ballet in 1990, The Royal Ballet as a Principal Dancer in 1993, and the American Ballet Theatre as a Principal Dancer in June 1995. He retired from ABT in July 2011, and was appointed Artistic Director of Ballet San Jose in 2013 until the company disbanded in 2016. Mr. Carreño is currently the Artistic Director of Ballet de Monterrey.
